If you are experiencing “crushing” emotions of hurt, sorrow, anger or fear, here are quick ways of restoring your centre and balance:
1. Take several really deep breaths letting your belly expand as you breath in and contract as you breath out with a “haaa…” sound. This will dilute your emotional heaviness with air, giving you space, like stretching it over a wider area but making it much less intense!
2. Drink some water so your cells can rehydrate and send split second messages to and from your brain to stay calm, to relax. Emotions are energy in motion so like any exercise we do we need to rehydrate and take a bit of healthy food to “re-fuel”. Don’t let heavy emotions “drain” you of water and nutrients.
3. Don’t try to escape from the emotion with alcohol, drugs, etc. Dive deep into the emotion. Discover exactly where in your body it is being held. This is done by feeling, being present to your body. Then be sympathetic to the emotion: acknowledge that’s exactly what you are feeling. Be quiet with it and send it unconditional love from your heart. Wait with it patiently giving it your attention…and in a while just notice its intensity simply DROP. Give it more attention, more love and it will just fade away.
